Why I Chose Tech:

Why I Chose Tech:
Honestly, tech chose me. I kind of fell into tech because one of my previous jobs required advanced skills that I didn't have at the time, but always wanted to acquire. I'm curious by nature, so the more I learned, the more my interest in exploring other tech avenues piqued.

Advice for future #BlackInTech Professionals:
Jump in!! The tech pool is vast and there are so many facets to discover and explore. Secondly, find a mentor and take chances to uncover the right area within tech that you can master and then grow your career. Lastly, don't be afraid to shine like a diamond because the best, most innovative tech ideas always win!

Andre Straker

Why I Chose Tech:
That's a fun question for me because I didn't choose tech, tech chose me. Early in my career, I was working for a boutique financial services firm and I knew it wasn't something that I wanted to do for the rest of my career. I shared my aspirations to switch to pharma sales with a family friend and he recommended that I speak with his boss at a major tech firm the rest is history.

The reason I love working in Tech is because it is always evolving which forces me to adapt and learn new things quickly. This motivates me to be the best version of myself every day. It has also enabled me to meet, collaborate, and build friendships with many intelligent, engaging, and driven people from many different walks of life. Most importantly, Tech allows me to provide my family with a financially stable life while not missing out on important life events like plays, sporting events, and in-class presentations.

Advice for future #BlackInTech Professionals:
Don't feel as if you need to change who you are in order to get a foot in the door. Be your authentic self!! Don't be afraid to speak your mind and have your ideas heard. They hired YOU because they feel YOU bring something specific to the table that other candidates didn't. Give them what they are looking for! Build a network. Start with meeting all of the leaders on your team as well as with your teammates. Also, try to forge relationships with other business units within your company. The more people that know you, the better. From there, I strongly recommend finding a mentor as it's difficult to navigate your way in the tech world alone.
