TomBarryName: Tom Barry

Job Title: Customer Success Manager

What do you do at BitSight and how long have you worked here?
I work with customers to help them benefit from the expertise and technology they purchased from BitSight as a way to build on their existing first and third-party risk management programs. I have been with BitSight since April of 2018.

What is your background? How did you get into Customer Success?
I started in Customer Success at Veracode and worked there for 5 years before joining the BitSight team. I got into Customer Success because I was looking for a way to work with clients both strategically and tactically and I enjoy problem solving with different personality types. My focus has been in first and third party application security testing but my professional interests are in overall risk and program management.

What challenges you the most at BitSight?
Learning various technical details about the cybersecurity industry and helping educate based on what is currently relevant for the clients I am working with. The industry and threat landscape change rapidly and it can be a challenge to keep a finger on the pulse of cybersecurity. BitSight is forward thinking and offers many opportunities to learn and grow, from the cutting edge, as the industry evolves.

What is your favorite thing to work on at BitSight?
Third-party risk management. This has always been a difficult task for companies and the potential cost and impact of a breach caused via a third party vendor creates a growing need for expertise in this area of focus. I also enjoy getting involved with charity work wherever possible because I think it’s extremely important for BitSight to show their connection with the community and involvement in a good cause outside of our day to day work.

What is the most important thing you learned at BitSight?
That vendor assessments can be one of the most challenging, cumbersome and important tasks a risk management professional is responsible for. With BitSight, you can streamline vendor assessments and focus your efforts where it is most relevant. By translating complex cybersecurity issues into simple business context, you can not only be more efficient in how you approach vendor risk management but you can also simplify how you talk about risk with your board or regulatory bodies.

What advice do you have for someone first getting into this field?
Find as many ways as you can to network and learn from the folks considered experts in this industry. Security is, by design, a tight-knit community and it is very hard to be considered an expert in cybersecurity but it is important to remember that “experts” started from the same place you are. Seek out education on your own to harden your skills and knowledge of this space. There is so much free content, topics and experts to follow on places like LinkedIn, Twitter and websites like Dark Reading, Ars Technica, and Threat Post.

Who is your biggest inspiration and why?
My 93 year old Nana. She bravely fights through, when times are tough. She demonstrates how to treat people the way you want to be treated and taught me many things about respect and loyalty in whatever it is that I commit to. Her strength and courage inspires me to do good in the world and create a better place for those who follow.

Where is your next trip? Where is your dream destination?
My next big trip is a road trip of the pacific northwest in North America. I’d like to fly into Vancouver, Canada and spend a few days having fun and exploring. Then take a train from Vancouver to Seattle to explore some more (definitely making a day trip to Mt. Rainier). Last leg of the trip would be to rent a car and drive to Portland and Eugene Oregon with a day trip to Crater Lake and the Pacific Crest trail for some camping/hiking. I’ve always wanted to go on a whale watch to see Orcas in the wild so that would be the only other bucket list item I’d want to check off in that region of the country.

Name one thing on your bucket list.
Skydiving above spectacular views (like Ireland or Switzerland).
