Security Effectiveness Ratings Provide Insight Into Peformance of Key Industries

A lot has been said about the state of information security; vendors frequently release new reports highlighting their findings and analysis. Some focus on incident volumes and geographical trends, while others look at attack vectors and the proliferation of specific threats; some even survey to measure beliefs and opinions about security posture.
The BitSight Insights Report is a new chapter in the security data story, showing for the first time how individual industries are faring in the war against cyber attackers. Using vast amounts of data on observed security incidents for 70 companies in the Fortune 200, we looked at the factors impacting the average BitSight SecurityRating for the Finance, Retail, Technology and Energy industries over the course of one year. Our findings were quite surprising.
If you’re involved in IT Security, you know that quickly responding to and removing threats from your network is a constant challenge – especially when your industry is under targeted attack. Side note: For those of you unfamiliar with BitSight, The BitSight SecurityRating is a daily rating of a company’s security effectiveness. Similar to credit ratings, the rating is generated by analyzing externally collected data from multiple sources. By weighing the frequency, duration and severity of security events (which include communications with a known command and control server, spam propagation, and malware distribution), we rate how effective organizations are at responding to threats on their network.
